Fungus gnats love to lay their eggs in damp potting soil. The eggs become larvae, which feed on fungi in the soil (hence their name). The larvae are around 1/4-inch long with a shiny black head and an elongated, white-ish transparent body. In addition to fungi, they also like organic matter and will sometimes eat plant roots or seedlings. A slime trail that looks like traces of slugs or snails across the top of the soil is another telltale sign of fungus gnats in your houseplants....

To serve over pasta Use 1 1/2 to 2 oz. dried pasta per serving. Cook pasta according to package directions. Serve sauce over pasta. To Store Transfer sauce to an airtight container. Store in refrigerator up to 3 days or freeze up to 3 months. Creamy Vodka Prepare as directed, except stir in 1/4 cup vodka with the tomatoes in Step 1. Simmer as directed. Before serving or storing, stir in 3/4 cup heavy cream....

How to Control Temperature on Charcoal Grills Many grills come with a thermometer built into the cover, which is great for indirect grilling (when the air circulates around your food to cook it) and getting a rough idea of the charcoal grill temperature. If you don’t have one and are a stickler for numbers, you can buy a thermometer to put inside the grill. Many barbecue buffs swear by air probes that monitor the heat inside the pit of your grill....
Ham Loaf: Prepare as above, except use soft bread crumbs. Substitute 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard for the sage, basil, or oregano and omit the salt. Substitute 12 ounces lean ground beef or pork and 12 ounces ground cooked ham for the 1-1/2 pounds ground beef, lamb, or pork. Bake and let stand as above.
